Altitude-Induced Hypertension

Why blood pressure can rise at high altitude, who is at risk and how to manage hypertension when traveling to the mountains.

Travel health guide. Reviewed by Luis C. Palacios, MD, board-certified family physician.

Blood pressure changes at altitude

Lower oxygen levels activate the body’s stress response, which can raise blood pressure — especially during the first days at altitude and in people who travel between low and high elevations often.

Who should be careful

People with existing high blood pressure, heart disease or kidney disease should check their blood pressure before and during the trip.

What you can do

Bring a home blood pressure monitor, keep taking your medications and talk to your doctor about adjustments before travelling.
