Ascend gradually
Spend a night at a moderate altitude before going higher, and avoid strenuous exercise during the first 24–48 hours.
Hydrate and avoid alcohol
Drink plenty of water and limit alcohol and sedatives during the first days, as they can worsen breathing during sleep.
Know the serious forms
High altitude cerebral edema (HACE) causes confusion and loss of coordination; HAPE causes breathlessness at rest. Both are emergencies requiring descent.
Preventive medication
People with a history of altitude sickness may benefit from acetazolamide started before travel. Ask your doctor whether it is right for you.
